When Your Breaking Is Actually God Protecting You
What if the moment you felt most shattered was the moment God stepped closer?
"The Lord made it known to me and said, 'I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. O Lord, correct me with the justice of your word, but do not judge me in your anger, for you will not acquit me.'"
— Jeremiah 11:18-20
There's a kind of breaking that feels like God forgot you. The moment the relationship ended, the diagnosis came, the door closed — you looked around and wondered if anyone was listening at all.
But what if that breaking wasn't the end of your story? What if it was the hinge — the moment God intervened to protect you from something you couldn't see?
Scripture gives us a striking image in Jeremiah 11. The prophet had no idea a plot was forming against him. He was walking blind into danger. But God saw it. And God made known to Jeremiah what the conspiracy was, before it destroyed him. That passage pulls back the curtain on a God who is actively, quietly protecting even when everything looks like it's falling apart.
The word "protection" can feel hollow when you're in the middle of a night wondering how you'll make it through. But protection doesn't always mean rescue from the storm. Sometimes it means God is redirecting the storm — closing a door that looked like an answer but would have led somewhere harmful. Sometimes the breaking is the shield.
This doesn't mean every hard thing is punishment or that God causes suffering. It means that even in our breaking, we are not outside of his care. The potter sees the cracks before the clay does. And he knows which fractures need to happen — and which ones he's holding together by grace.
There's a story I share in today's video that I couldn't fit here — about a moment when letting go felt like losing, but looking back, it was the beginning of something only God could have written. If this stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it for a few minutes.
May you trust that your breaking is not beyond his reach. May you find quiet courage in the space between the fracture and the mending.
A prayer
Father, we confess that when things break apart, we struggle to trust your hand in it. Forgive us for assuming you are distant when you are most near. Help us to believe that your love does not abandon us in the breaking — it intercepts us there. Teach us to lean on your perspective when ours is so limited. We surrender the outcome to you, trusting that you see what we cannot. In Jesus' name, amen.
